Your Heard Tell for Wednesday, 18 May, 2022 is turning down the noise and getting the information we need regarding the latest round of primary voting as some high profile races in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and others go to the voters in this midterm election cycle. We discuss how media and social media tend to focus on the outliers and extremes, and how unworthy schemers try to convince us those outliers and extremes are actually the whole story, how that starts the process of otherizing, and distorts our perception of what is really going on in the world. Guest Eric Garcia, journalist and author of the book “We Are Not Broken” returns to Heard Tell to talk about the viral video and reaction of a non-verbal valedictorian using a device to give her commencement speech brings up issues of technology opening up possibilities for folks with disabilities and challenges, but also shows how far we still have to go with perceptions and terminology in helping folks how they need, not just how folks think they need help.
